면역치료(Immunotherapy)는 면역학적 원리와 방법론을 활용하여 면역세포 또는 면역 관련 분자의 기능을 조절함으로써 질환을 치료하는 치료 전략입니다. 현재 면역치료는 크게 두 가지 주요 질환 분야에 집중되고 있습니다.

첫 번째는 종양 면역치료(Tumor Immunotherapy, Immuno-Oncology)로, 인체의 면역 시스템을 활성화하거나 강화하여 종양세포를 인식하고 공격하도록 유도하는 치료 방식입니다. 이는 면역관문 억제(PD-1/PD-L1 등), 면역 효과 세포 전달(CAR-T 세포 등), 면역 신호 전달 경로 조절 등의 기전을 통해 면역 감시 및 종양 제거 능력을 향상시킵니다. 정밀성, 장기 지속 효과, 전신적 작용이라는 특징을 바탕으로 암 치료의 핵심 전략으로 자리 잡고 있습니다.

두 번째는 자가면역질환 면역치료(Immunotherapy for Autoimmune Diseases)입니다. 이 치료법은 과도하거나 비정상적으로 활성화된 면역 반응을 억제하는 데 중점을 둡니다. 특정 염증성 사이토카인이나 면역세포 기능을 차단하는 항체 또는 저분자 약물을 활용하여 면역계가 정상 조직을 공격하는 현상을 줄이고, 질환의 진행을 조절하며 증상을 완화합니다.
